CARPE DIEM

Doppio espresso
In little porcelain cup

Accent thick
Eyelids heavy

Salvatore was his name
Like the Ferragamos he wore

And yes
There was also a Ferrari

He smiled and spoke
She smiled and spoke back

He left before her
Taking the first table for two

Excused himself
As she was passing

Introduced himself
Most eager and pleasantly

Asking if she cared
To join with him

Such an interesting choice
Of phrasing she thought

A test to be certain
A splash of color in the vortex

She held his gaze
For a moment more

Allowed herself the luxury
Of contemplation

Smiled sweetly
Said thank you

But
No…

Walking across the lot
She felt his gaze upon her

Got in the hippie van
Turned the engine on

Looked at her reflection
In the rearview mirror

Slapped the steering wheel
Over and over

Lamenting the scream
Has been suppressed so long
